Breaking News: New Pedro Report Translated

9 07 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Little did I know, when I woke up this morning, that the majority of my day would consist of translating Dominican newspaper reports from Spanish to English.  A second report has now surfaced from candeladeportiva.com, here is the loose Spanish to English translation…

The news of the signing of Pedro Martinez with the Philadelphia Phillies has been confirmed with the information we received of the pitcher heading towards the city of Philadelphia to undergo physical examinations.

Anything related to the contract is being handled discreetly, but it is a fact that Pedro has signed with the champions and, perhaps tomorrow, the news will be made public.

More details expected soon.

UPDATE: Some reports now say that Pedro threw up to 93 mph. Highly unlikely in my opinion.

This must mean that they’re getting Halladay and moving Happ as part of the deal. Ultimately, I’d rather see what Pedro’s got left than rely on Rodrigo Lopez but it seems to me that Pedro is just the insurance plan if Happ has to be dealt.

I’d have to think the Phils are no longer in the Halladay sweepstakes, especially if Vernon Wells has to come along in the deal. I don’t see them taking on a total of $105 million over the next three years. It would essentially be like giving Halladay 52.5 million per season.

Don’t think this has any bearing on the Halladay deal one way or the other. If prorated, it’s just under $2 million, no big deal.

How pissed will Omar Minaya be if Pedro actually has 5 mph more on his fastball than he ever did for the Mets and pitches well for the Phils at a peanuts price tag?
