Warrick on 76ers Radar

31 07 2009

According to Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News, “The 76ers are among two or three teams negotiating with unrestricted free-agent forward Hakim Warrick, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Warrick, from Friends Central, has spent his 4-year NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Sixers, the source said, and the Milwaukee Bucks are involved with the 6-9 Warrick, although ESPN.com is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are also in the picture.

As with all of the free agents the Sixers have contacted to fill out their roster for the coming season, they are offering a 1-year contract. They have their midlevel exception, worth a maximum of about $5.8 million, available. Warrick, 27, was listed on the Grizzlies’ salary cap last season at $2,119,102.

The No. 19 overall pick in the first round of the 2005 draft, he was a member of Syracuse’s NCAA national championship team in 2003. He appeared in 82 games last season, making seven starts, averaging 11.6 points and five rebounds, shooting 49.1 percent from the floor.

He holds career averages of 10.2 points and 4.3 rebounds, shooting 50 percent.”

UPDATE:  Warrick has signed with the Miluakee Bucks.  The Bucks, with this signing, are dangerously close to the luxury tax threshold and still have the rights to restricted free-agent point guard Ramon Sessions. The Sixers, in my opinion, should offer Sessions their mid level exception.  He is far batter than any of the players that have currently been discussed to take over for Andre Miller.

I like it but where does he fit? Is this a precursor to a trade?
