Phillies and Indians In Serious Talks for Cliff Lee

28 07 2009

In what suddenly seems trivial because of the passing of a beloved Philadelphia legend, the Phillies are now believed to be in serious discussions with the Cleveland Indians regarding Cliff Lee. Several big league sources and scouts who remain unidentified insist that the Phillies have enough high end pitching talent to complete a deal without including Kyle Drabek. The prospects that the Indians are said to have interest in are: Vance Worley, Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, and of course Drabek. No word yet on whether J.A. Happ would need to be included. This is also the clearest sign that the Roy Halladay talks have cooled considerably. This could be a ploy to entice the Jays back into talks, however it is believed that the Boston Red Sox made a strong offer for Halladay today. The deal was said to be headlined by Clay Bucholz, and also included AAA pitcher Michael Bowden (believed to be a high end prospect that could pitch in the majors now) and top OF prospect Ryan Westmoreland. More details on all things Phillies and Roy Halladay/Cliff Lee. And once again, my sincerest condolences go out to Jim Johnson’s family and friends.

For what it’s worth, Red Sox and Jays officials are strongly denying the aforementioned package. The next two days and 20 hours should be very interesting.

PCPSPORTS.COM UPDATE : Philly.com is reporting that the Phillies and Jays continue to talk about Roy Halladay, even quoting J.P. Riccardi as saying (i’m paraphrasing here) that the Phils and Jays are still talking but that they still have not met their needs for Halladay. Meanwhile, Jayson Stark seems to think that both Riccardi and Ruben Amaro are under a tremendous amount of pressure to pull off a deal and he quoted multiple baseball men who believe it will eventually come to fruition.
