Just as the euphoria had begun to set in regarding Chase Utley’s early return to the baseball diamond from his November 24th hip surgery, we learn that staff ace Cole Hamels will fly to Philadelphia to have his pitching elbow examined.  Yup, his pitching elbow!

Hamels has experienced discomfort in the elbow throughout spring training but explains that he has experienced tightness at the start of each season and, for that reason, he is not worried.  Hamels went on to say, “When I’m in games I feel fine. It’s coming out of the games, having it stiffen up.”

The left-hander will be examined by team physician Michael Ciccotti.  Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. says, “We do not think it is serious, at least at this time.  We thought it was important for Dr. Ciccotti to check him out and see if there is anything more serious than what we think it is.”

We’ll keep you updated…
