Reid Punts Away Eagles Playoff Hopes

16 11 2008

They probably weren’t going to make the playoffs anyway, but today Andy Reid insured that the Philadelphia Eagles would once again miss the postseason.  With 1:30 remaining in overtime, Reid opted to punt the ball on fourth and one.  Apparently Reid doesn’t “play to win the game.”  From a single game standpoint, the call may have been the right one.  But already trailing in a wide open wild card race, this tie has sealed the Eagle’s fate for the 2008 season.  It’s time for the fat man to be fired.

Sorry Tom, have to agree with the writer here. When you punt on a fourth and one in OT with under 2 minutes left, your basically admitting a tie and declaring the game over. Unacceptbale. A loss is the same as a tie in the standings for the most part. And the Eags have no shot anyways…..Go For It.

So, would it be better for Reid to go for it on 4th and 1 on their own 32 and give the ball to the Bengals close to field goal position, especially since they’ve had trouble converting 3rd & short, 4th & short all year?

While a tie is like a loss, you guys would have killed him even more had he lost this game.

It was one of the most gutless moves I have ever witnessed. It was an absolute disgrace to tell your players and your fan base you surrender. If you think your a playoff team, you have to win that game and if you think your a playoff team you have to be able to get 1-yard.

Couldn’t agree anymore with Gill. It was gutless and very indicative of how Reid’s last 4 seasons have been.

Very valid point. Playoff teams convert on 3rd & 3.
