Philadelphia 76ers: Odd Man Out?

I loved the Theo Ratliff signing.  I love Monday’s Donyell Marshall acquisition.  I’m a bit confused about who the odd man out might be.  The Sixers currently have the following 13 players on their roster:

  • Samuel Dalembert
  • Elton Brand
  • Thaddeus Young
  • Andre Iguodala
  • Andre Miller
  • Louis Williams
  • Reggie Evans
  • Kareem Rush
  • Donyell Marshall
  • Theo Ratliff
  • Marreese Speights
  • Willie Green
  • Royal Ivey

This doesn’t mean that one of these players has to be released, but at the very least, one will not be dressing for each game.  Assuming that Iguodala is the shooting guard and Thadeus starts at small forward, I’ll assume the following…

  1. Ratliff is a lock.  Only backup center on the roster.
  2. Evans probably stays, but status is a little shakier considering Marshall can play both F positions.
  3. Lou Williams is the 6th man and is staying, period.

I think what it really comes down to is what the Sixers think they can get out of Speights.  If all 13 players remain on the roster, either Speights or Ivey will not dress.  If a player is to go, it would most likely be Willie Green, though you’ll be hard pressed to find a team willing to take on his salary.  Oddly enough, last year power forward was our weakness.  Now we’ve got four…Brand, Evans, Speights, and Marshall.  And that doesn’t include Young who finished the year starting at PF but is more suited for the SF position.  I’m sure Stefanski’s got a plan, as he always seems to.  Anybody care to guess what it might be?

Bet Speights and Ivey take turns modeling designer suits……

If they find a taker for Evans or Green, they will be gone…

I think they’ll still really like Evans as a role player. Green just doesn’t fit with Rush and Ivey added to the team.

I agree with John, Speights will be in street clothes for most of the season, unless he is WAY more talented then we think. This is a team that wants to win now and they can afford to let him sit.

I agree, but if they can trade the salary they will, i think at least…..

I agree entirely. I don’t think there are any takers for Green though, otherwise he probably would have been shed for a 2nd round pick just like Korver.

Agreed. On my post of the story on the Donyell Marshall signing, i noted that John Hollinger has Willie Green rated as one of the 10 worst players in the league in terms of production per 40 minutes. (And as one of the 10 most overrated, as well)

You can keep 15 guys now remember…only have to activate 12 on game day.

Yes, hence the phrase…”This doesn’t mean that one of these players has to be released, but at the very least, one will not be dressing for each game”

I see what i says, its just not as clear as writing out that you can keep 15 and dress 12 thats all :)

Barring injuries (which of course you can’t do)– the bench is too deep– how do you get quality minutes for all these decent but not great vets? I see a very difficult chemistry forming– Rush is a good player but he will sulk and hurt the team.

If he sulks and hurts the team, then set an example and say Adios Amigos!

There are no minutes to go around. I just have to assume these guys all know they are coming in as role players and should be fine with it. If you look at the guard positions, Iguodala and Miller will have to play 34 minutes a piece at the very least. That only leaves 28 minutes…Louis Williams will take up most of them! Sure players will swing between the 2-3 and we’ll see some creativity, but Ivey, Rush, and Green can’t expect too much PT.

Cheeks likes to go small a lot, I can see Williams, Ivey and Iggy on the floor with Brand and Sammy or Miller, Rush and Williams with Young and Brand..there is so much that Mo can do, he’ll go with the hot hand I assume.

People
, please stop complaining about having too much talent. I got the feeling if we signed another bum like Calvin booth you guys would be complaining too. This is a wonderful situation. Great job Ed!

Good call Jasmin. I think the Sixers are loaded, and could make a run at the east.
