Phillies Acquire LHP Scott Eyre From Cubs

7 08 2008

The Philadelphia Phillies have just announced a trade to the Chicago Cubs for veteran left handed reliever Scott Eyre in exchange for Clearwater RHP Brian Schlitter.  The Phils were interested in acquiring another left hander for the bullpen and were rumored to be interested in Ron Mahay of the Kansas City Royals, Brian Fuentes of the Colorado Rockies, and George Sherrill of the Baltimore Orioles but failed to consumate a trade prior to the non-waiver deadline (July 31st).  Eyre fell out of favor with manger Lou Pinella in Chicago and was designated for assignment on Tuesday, leaving the team seven days to either trade or release the veteran reliever.  The 36 year old southpaw had only pitched 11.1 innings for the Cubs this year, with a 7.15 ERA.  From 2005-2007 left handed hitters batted just .233 against Eyre, who is expected to be a situational pitcher for the Phils.  The team has yet to announce who will be demoted to make roster space for his acquisition.

Go figure the Phillies trade for a guy with an ERA of 7.11 and somehow thats considered an upgrade over what they already had. Did anyone else notice that they didn’t score a run today…just wondering.
